Coach - Move Players between Teams (e.g. Varsity -> JV)
FanAngel Connect

Welcome, coaches! This guide covers the "Move or Copy" functionality, a powerful tool designed to make managing your rosters during tryouts and the start of the season incredibly simple.

Often, you'll start with all potential players on a single "master" team (e.g., "Boys Basketball") for organization, communication, and fundraising. This feature allows you to easily split those players into their final teams (like Varsity, JV, and Freshman) after rosters are set, all while keeping your data and settings intact.

Part 1: Duplicating Your Team (Creating the New Rosters)

Before you can move players, you need to create the new, empty teams they will be moved to. The "Duplicate" function is the fastest way to do this, as it copies all your key team settings and integrations. (Note, your FanAngel Campaign Coach may have already created these teams for you).

Step 1. Navigate to Team Settings From your "My Teams" dashboard, click on your main team (e.g., "Boys Basketball") to open its settings.

Step 2. Duplicate Your Team On the Team settings tab, scroll to the very bottom and click the Duplicate team button.

Step 3. Confirm Duplication A pop-up will appear explaining what will and will not be copied. Most importantly, team members (your players) will not be copied. This gives you a clean, empty roster to move players into. Click Duplicate.

Step 4. Rename and Configure Your New Team You will be taken to the settings page for your new team, which will have "(duplicated)" in its name.

  1. Rename the team to its official name (e.g., "Boys JV Basketball").
  2. Adjust the Level tags to match the new team. For a JV team, you would remove the "Varsity" and "Freshman" tags, leaving only "JV".
  3. Click Save changes.

Repeat this process for any other teams you need, such as a "Freshman" team.

Part 2: Moving Players to Their New Teams

Now that your new teams are ready, you can move players from your main tryout roster to their permanent teams.

Step 1. Go to Your Main Roster Navigate back to your original team (e.g., "Boys Basketball") and click the Members tab.

Step 2. Select Players to Move Filter your list to "Participant" to see just your players. Use the checkboxes on the left to select all the players you want to move to a specific team (e.g., all your new JV players).

Step 3. Choose "Move to team" Once you select a player, an action bar will appear at the top of the list. Click Move to team.

Step 4. Select the Destination In the "Move Athletes to Another Team" pop-up, select the destination team (e.g., "Boys JV Basketball") from the dropdown menu and click Move.

Pro Tip: Move vs. Copy

  • Move: This is the most common action. It removes the player from the original team and places them on the new team.
  • Copy: This is useful for "swing players" who may play on multiple teams. It will create a copy of the player on the new team while also leaving them on the original team.

Step 5. Verify the Move The players will disappear from your original roster. You can then navigate to your new team's Members tab to confirm they have been successfully moved.

Part 3: Final Cleanup & MaxPreps Sync

Once all players have been moved, you can clean up your original team and sync your new rosters to MaxPreps.

Step 1. Clean Up Your Original Team Go back to the Team settings for your original team.

  1. Rename it to its permanent name (e.g., "Boys Varsity Basketball").
  2. Adjust the Level tags to remove the levels that no longer apply (e.g., remove "JV" and "Freshman"). This ensures schedules and communications are now cleanly separated.
  3. Click Save changes.

Step 2. Syncing with MaxPreps (Optional)This feature integrates seamlessly with MaxPreps.

  • Prerequisite 1: Before syncing, ensure all players have a Jersey Number assigned in the "Members" tab. This is required by MaxPreps.
  • Prerequisite 2: On the "Members" tab, you may also need to edit each player and ensure their Team level tag (e.g., "Men/Boys Varsity") is correctly set.

Once your prerequisites are met, go to the Team settings page for your new team (e.g., "Boys Varsity Basketball"), scroll down to the MaxPreps integration, and click Sync. This will push your new roster directly to MaxPreps. (Note: This also happens automatically every night.)
